What is Botox?
How many facial expressions do you make in a single day? Smiling, frowning, squinting, raising an eyebrow… All of these expressions which we repeat multiple times a day contribute to the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
Frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines are all products of such repetitive movements. Botox, a protein derived from Botulinum toxin, prevents, reduces, or erases such fine lines and wrinkles by inhibiting the movements which cause them. Botox can be used to reduce the appearance of existing fine lines and wrinkles, as well as a preventative treatment. Treatment is short and requires no downtime. Convenience and affordability make Botox a favorite cosmetic treatment for an increasing number of beauty aficionados.
How Botox works
Botox is a neurotoxin protein that temporarily paralyzes the muscles in areas where it is injected.
Botulinum toxin injections block nerve signals and prevent targeted muscles from contracting. These muscles are then unable to perform the movements which have caused (or are likely to cause) wrinkles.
Skin injections of any kind also prompt a regenerative process within the skin, which promotes the production of new collagen and elastin. Botox effectively treats and prevents fine lines and wrinkles, as well as rejuvenates the skin for a more youthful, lifted appearance.

What to Expect
When you arrive for your Botox treatment, your esthetician will discuss with you which areas are to be treated. Next, the treatment area will be cleansed and injections will begin.
This heat intentionally causes damage to fibers within the skin which prompts the regeneration of collagen and elastin. RF microneedling reaches deeper layers of the skin, producing more dramatic results than microneedling alone. Needle depth and heat may both be adjusted, making RF microneedling more adaptable to clients’ specific needs than traditional microneedling. RF microneedling is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, scars, skin laxity, discoloration, and textural issues.
Botox Alternatives
A Younger You Med Spa also offers injectable botulinum toxin products Xeomin, Jeuveau and Daxxify. While these products are similar to Botox DeLand in terms of function and results, there are some differences which may cause some people to benefit more from one than the others.
Jeuveau DeLand is FDA approved to treat glabellar lines, and is also commonly used to treat lines on the forehead and crow’s feet. While Botox is used to treat the same lines as well as others, Jeuveau may be a superior product for these areas in some clients. Xeomin DeLand varies from Botox and Jeuveau as it does not contain any accessory proteins, which may help prevent antibody resistance.
Over time, Botox may become less effective as the body develops antibody resistance. The absence of accessory proteins gives Xeomin the ability to maintain its efficacy through long term use. Xeomin is commonly used to treat glabellar lines, abnormal muscle contractions, and excessive salivation. A Younger You Med Spa’s highly experienced aesthetic specialists can help determine which product can most effectively help you achieve your beauty goals.
DAXXIFY® is FDA approved to smooth moderate to severe lines between the brows. It is the only long-lasting frown line treatment powered by a peptide with results that last on average 6 months and up to 9 months for some. All frown line treatments require a special ingredient to stabilize botulinum toxin A, the protein responsible for helping smooth moderate to severe frown lines. DAXXIFY® is unique because it is the only formulation that uses a novel peptide as a stabilizer and does not contain human or animal byproducts.
Recovery After Botox
After receiving your Botox injections, you may return to your regular activities. However, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours to ensure the best results. You should avoid lying down for 4 hours following treatment, and avoid cleansing or moisturizing the treated skin for 6 hours.
Gently exercising your face and relaxing for the rest of the day will allow the Botox to settle into the appropriate areas. It is also important to avoid irritating the treatment area by rubbing or touching it. Facials should also be avoided for 24 hours following treatment. Alcohol and blood thinners should also be avoided for 24 hours to prevent bruising. Sun exposure and tanning beds or heat lamps should also be avoided for 24 hours.
Your Botox Results
Results from your Botox treatment will take 1 to 2 weeks to appear. The body will slowly metabolize the Botox and results will begin to fade. This typically happens 3 to 6 months after treatment. Follow-up treatments spaced about 4 months apart are recommended to maintain results. Schedule a consultation with A Younger You Med Spa to discuss your beauty goals and see if Botox is right for you!
Botox FAQs
What are the side effects of Botox?
Side effects of Botox include headache, itching, rash, muscle stiffness, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, trouble swallowing, cough, allergic reactions, fever, muscle weakness, fatigue, sore throat, and loss of appetite. It is also possible to experience reactions at injection sites such as redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or infection.
Botox may also cause the following conditions in the eyes: drooping eyelids, uneven brows, itching, dryness, reduced blinking, sensitivity to light, or eyelid swelling and bruising.
Are wrinkles worse after the effects of treatment fade?
No, wrinkles will not be worse after Botox wears off. However, the reappearance of wrinkles may seem dramatic. In fact, the regenerative effects of Botox injections improve the skin over time, which may reduce the need for further Botox treatments or allow for more time between treatments.
Does Botox work on all wrinkles?
Botox is ideal for dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles that are caused by movement. Static wrinkles are not as effectively treated with Botox.
